NEW U.S. 58 ROUTE APPROVED BY STATE OFFICIALS

The location for the first 10.6-mile project on U.S. 58 - which eventually is to give Virginia a four-lane road from the coalfields to Virginia Beach - has been approved by state transportation officials.

It generally will follow the existing route of Alternate U.S. 58 in Lee County from Ben Hur to Dryden, along 1.7 miles from Virginia 644 at Ben Hur to Virginia 643 a half-mile west of Pennington Gap.

From the end of that section, a bypass will be built along 3.7 miles west of Lee County Community Hospital, then east across Virginia 421, south across the North Fork of the Powell River, and tying back into Alternate 58 near Virginia 829.

The next segment will continue along existing Alternate 58 almost to Virginia 630, then move south of Dryden across Virginia 743 to Virginia 619. It will turn north across the Powell River before reconnecting with the existing roadway.

The next step is for transportation engineers to design plans for the specific route of the next phase of the new roadway. - Southwest bureau
