Virginia Highlands Community College has established the Lou Crabtree Awards to recognize outstanding student writers.

The first awards are to James Brown of Chilhowie for his essay, "The Wall"; Brenda Stephenson, Bristol, for her research paper, "The Trail of the Gas Well"; Holly Thomas, Meadowview, for her story, "On the Horizon," and Steve Coleman, Wytheville, for his poem, "The Last One."

Crabtree is an Abingdon writer. In addition to a commemorative plaque and cash award, each winner also received a copy of her book "Sweet Hollow." - Southwest bureau
