ROCKBRIDGE TRACTOR-TRAILER CRASH KILLS DRIVER

A Richmond truck driver was killed Tuesday morning when his tractor-trailer's brakes failed, and it ran off a Rockbridge County highway and overturned.

Calvin L. Powell, 47, died at the scene of the 6:45 a.m. accident on Virginia 56, about two miles east of Vesuvius, a state police dispatcher said.

The truck Powell was driving went out of control as it was going down a steep grade. The rig ran off the left side of the road, hit two trees and an embankment, then overturned, the dispatcher said. Powell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was crushed.

A passenger, Mamie Wright, was in fair condition with leg injuries at the University of Virginia Medical Center, a spokesman there said.
