CAVALIERS EDGE GATE CITY

Steve Dalton smashed a three-run, game-tying homer in the fifth inning and Jason Kilbourne drove home the game-winner in the sixth as Carroll County downed Gate City 7-5 Tuesday in the first round of the Region IV baseball tournament.

Kevin DeHaven hit a first-inning homer to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead, but the Blue Devils scored four in the second. Gate City led 5-2 in the fifth before Dalton's shot.

In the sixth inning, Chris Crigger led off with his third hit and, after two outs, Kilbourne drove him home with a single. Kilbourne eventually scored after two wild pitches. Ray Briggs finished 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double for Carroll County, which will play Richlands at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bluefield in the semifinals.

Reliever James Phillips picked up the win after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Brad Leonard earned the save by coaxing a ground-out with two on and two out in the seventh.

In other baseball Tuesday:

At Tazewell, the homestanding Bulldogs slugged two first-inning home runs off of Charlie Shrader on their way to a 7-2 win over Christiansburg in the first round of the Region IV tournament.

Tony Roop hit a solo homer in the first and Peery Heldreth followed with a three-run blast to put Tazewell on top for good. Eric Motley added a run-scoring fourth-inning double and Brandon Matley pitched a two-hit complete game for the Bulldogs. Tazewell will play Virginia High in Bristol on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Jay Basham belted a two-run homer in the second to give the Demons their only runs.

SOFTBALL: At Dry Fork, Lord Botetourt used 11 hits and 13 walks to blow out Gretna 15-1 in the first round of the Region III tournament. Ashley Moore had a bases-clearing second-inning double and finished 3-for-3 with four RBI. Denise McNitt added two hits and three stolen bases. Janell Sowers went the distance to improve to 12-2 on the season. Sowers allowed three hits and struck out seven.

The Cavaliers will play Rustburg at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinals. At Floyd, Bobbie Joe Wright did it all as Glenvar snapped Castlewood's 18-game winning streak with a 7-0 win in the Region C tournament. Wright pitched a one-hitter and also went 2-for-3 with a triple. Kristy Robinson scored three runs and stole five bases for the Highlanders, who advance to meet James River for the fifth time this season.

At Floyd, Camille Arbogast and Stacy Brugh each drove in two runs and James River blasted Floyd 13-2 in the Region C tournament. Sherry Allison improved to 17-3 by pitching a three-hitter for the Knights, who jumped to a 6-0 first-inning lead. James River will face Glenvar on Thursday at a site to be determined.
