BOTETOURT POUNDS GRETNA 15-1 IN REGION III SOFTBALL

Lord Botetourt used 11 hits and 13 walks to blow out Gretna 15-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the Region III softball tournament at Tunstall High School.

Ashley Moore had a bases-clearing double in the second inning and finished 3-for-3 with four RBI for the Cavaliers. Denise McNitt added two hits and stole three bases.

Janell Sowers went the distance to improve her record to 12-2. Sowers gave up three hits and struck out seven. The Cavaliers will play Rustburg at 5 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal.

In other softball Tuesday:

At Floyd, Bobbie Joe Wright was the star as Glenvar snapped Castlewood's 18-game winning streak with a 7-0 victory in the Region C tournament. Wright pitched a one-hitter and also went 2-for-3 with a triple. Kristy Robinson scored three runs and stole five bases for the Highlanders, who advance to meet James River for the fifth time this year.

At Floyd, Camille Arbogast and Stacy Brugh each drove in two runs and James River blasted Floyd 13-2 in the Region C tournament. Sherry Allison improved her record to 17-3 by pitching a three-hitter for the Knights, who went up 6-0 in the first inning. James River faces Glenvar on Thursday at an undetermined site.

At Dry Fork, nine Salem players had a hit and the Spartans took advantage of seven Brookville errors in an 11-4 Region III tournament triumph over the Bees. Salem will visit Tunstall in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday.

BASEBALL: Cave Spring will be seeking a berth in the Group AAA state tournament when it plays today in the Northwestern Region semifinals. The Knights, who won the Roanoke Valley District title, play at home against Woodbridge at 4 p.m. today. Woodbridge defeated Gar-Field 6-1 in a first-round game Tuesday.

At Hillsville, Steve Dalton smashed a three-run, game-tying homer in the fifth inning and Jason Kilbourne drove home the game-winner in the sixth as Carroll County downed Gate City 7-5 in the first round of the Region IV tournament.

At Tazewell, the Bulldogs slugged two first-inning home runs off Charlie Shrader on their way to a 7-2 victory over Christiansburg in the first round of the Region IV tournament.

Tazewell will play Virginia High in Bristol at 7 p.m. Thursday.
