DuPont plant to idle 27 in management

MARTINSVILLE - The DuPont nylon plant said Wednesday it is eliminating 27 management jobs.

"This is just part of the restructuring we've been going through," said Johnny Watkins, the plant's human resources manager. "These are all good employees. We just don't have jobs for them."

He said the workers - "primarily in first-line supervisor-type jobs" - will have about 60 days to decide which of four options they'll take: retire, transfer to another DuPont plant, move to an hourly job at the Martinsville site or enter DuPont's "transition program" to prepare them for another career.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the plant employed about 4,500 people. Now Watkins said, that number is about 1,400. - Staff report \

Rebuilding starts at Windy Hill Key

Rebuilding has started at Windy Hill Key, the Roanoke County apartment complex hit by fire during a May thunderstorm.

Building Specialists Inc. of Roanoke has a $60,000 contract for an initial phase of the work, which includes reconstruction of the roof and the third-floor support structure. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.

The interior work will be offered for bids in about a month, said Mark Karras of Dewar Properties, the Valdosta, Ga., company in the partnership that owns Windy Hill Key.

The fire displaced seven families and left 10 apartments condemned. Repairs will cost about $200,000, Karras said. Fire officials had estimated damage as high as $500,000.

Earle Shumate, vice president of Building Specialists, said the company is using local labor and suppliers in support of union efforts to encourage the hiring of Western Virginians. - Staff report
