3,000 MORE JOIN UMW ON WALKOUT

The United Mine Workers on Wednesday ordered 3,000 miners in West Virginia and three other states to join a walkout by 6,200 workers against the nation's coal operators.

The fourth wave of walkouts effective at midnight Wednesday targeted some mines owned by the nation's No. 1 coal producer, Peabody Holding Co. Inc. of St. Louis, and the No. 2 producer, CONSOL Inc. of Upper St. Clair, Pa., said union President Richard Trumka.

Eugene Claypole, spokesman for UMW District 31 based in Fairmont, W.Va., said the latest wave includes about 600 miners at Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 2 mine in Fairview, Marion County, and about 500 miners at CONSOL's Blacksville No. 2 mine in Monongalia County. Eastern Associated is a Peabody subsidiary.
