VARNEY LEADS GLENVAR BOYS IN REGION C TENNIS ROMP

Nick Varney led the way as Glenvar dominated team and individual competition Wednesday in the Region C boys tennis semifinals.

Varney defeated Kevin Porter 6-2, 7-5 as the Highlanders overpowered Franklin 8-1 in a team semifinal. Glenvar will meet George Mason, a 7-2 winner over Powell Valley, in the final at 9 a.m. today.

In individual competition, Varney defeated Mike Pierce of Appalachia 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the final at 1 p.m. today. His opponent will be Clark County's Patrick Bartlett, a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 winner over Mike Baker of New Kent.

In a doubles semifinal, Varney and Eric Starkloff defeated Pound's Chris England and Brad Jatt 6-2, 6-1. The Glenvar duo will play at 3 p.m. today against the winner of a New Kent-Clark County matchup Wednesday.
