UNION, VA CENTER CLASH

A union that represents about 420 of the 1,250 employees at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton complained Wednesday of mismanagement at the facility, but a hospital official denied the accusation.

"The labor-management relationship at this hospital has gradually deteriorated over the past two years to a point that the union has reached an impasse in its negotiations with the director," said Deola Smith, president of Local 2328 of the American Federation of Government Employees.

"Morale is at such a low point that the care of our veterans is beginning to suffer," Smith said in a prepared statement.

But Dennis Bryant, assistant to hospital Director Allan Goss, denied any problems with patient care.
