BANKER JOINS RACE FOR 9TH SEAT

Rocky Mount banker Allen W. Dudley announced Wednesday he is seeking the Republican nomination for the 9th District House of Delegates seat.

Dudley's announcement assures 9th District voters of a race in finding the successor to Willard Finney, who announced this spring he would not seek re-election to the seat he has held 12 years. Dudley will face Wes Naff, a Rocky Mount real estate agent who is seeking the Democratic nomination.

Dudley said his representation of the 9th District would be markedly different from that of Finney.

"I'm running as a Republican because of my conservative beliefs," he said. "The bottom line is that the people of this district are conservative, and they want strong, conservative leadership who believe as they believe."

Dudley, 45, is vice president of commercial lending and personnel at First Virginia Bank in Rocky Mount. He and his wife, Virginia, have been married 26 years and have a son, Allen Jr., 24.

Dudley got an associate's degree from Ferrum College in 1967 and a bachelor's degree in history from East Tennessee State University in 1970. He taught in the Franklin County school system three years before becoming a banker.

Dudley's announcement stressed his fiscal conservatism, and he said he would like to put that to use in looking at the state's educational system.

"When 52 cents of every dollar goes to administrative overhead, something is wrong with the system," he said. "We need money for teachers and textbooks, not money to enhance the career of a bureaucrat in Richmond."

The 9th House district covers all of Floyd County, most of Franklin County and portions of Bedford and Pittsylvania counties.
