ACADEMY GYMNASTS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS

Five members of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics team qualified to compete in a national championship meet as a result of their all-around performances in the regional qualifying meet May 22-23 in Philadelphia.

In the open optional division, Kelli Newcomb qualified with an all-around score of 36.65. In the intermediate optional division, Dawn Turpin (34.80), Holly Saunders (34.55), Erin Lester (34.45) and April Southern (33.55) all qualified for nationals.

The national meet will be held Monday through June 10 in Orlando, Fla.

In the developmental optional division, April Conner won the bronze medal on uneven bars for the six-state mid-Atlantic Region with a score of 8.40. There is no national meet for this level.
