PUNISH SERBS FOR WAR CRIMES

IN RESPONSE to the May 4 commentary by Stephen S. Rosenfeld entitled "Serbs, the villains now, have been the victims as well":

The Serbs need to be punished for their war crimes, and should not be let off because they have been persecuted before. The Jews were persecuted, so if they start "ethnic cleansing" the Palestinians, should we let them? That's ridiculous!

When Croatia declared independence, it dislocated 60,000 Serbs. So if the world were fair, the Serbs should be ethnic-cleansing the Croatians, not the Bosnians. And the world isn't fair.

At the end of Rosenfeld's commentary, he says that President Clinton should state that the Serbs shouldn't be punished, but should manipulate his words so that it doesn't sound like he is saying that Hitler had a fair claim on Czechoslovakia's German-populated Sudetenland. That's almost like asking Clinton to lie! I think he should help try to convince the Bosnian-Serbs to follow the Vance-Owen plan, which I think is right. JAIME BURNS-FRANCE ROANOKE
