Cornerback Danny Dunbar, a projected starter opposite All-Big East corner Tyronne Drakeford, may become Tech's second victim of the new NCAA rule that requires a student-athlete earn at least 18 credit hours during the regular school year. Defensive tackle Eugene Mays was the first and will miss the coming season.
Dunbar's classmate, safety Kenny Bailey, intends to transfer to the University of Delaware, Bailey said Thursday. Bailey, from Houston, Del., said the Division I-AA school has promised him a scholarship.
Tech is overstocked in the defensive backfield, and Bailey was third on the depth chart after spring practice.
"At that level, I wasn't ready," Bailey said. "The coaches helped me make the decision. I saw what I was doing, and it wasn't correct . . . going out on the field and not doing things right. I wasn't picking up as fast as everybody else."
Dunbar, a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder from Bradenton, Fla., said he earned 16 credit hours during the 1992-93 school year. He said Wednesday he hopes to be allowed to make up unfinished work in one of two classes so he can remain eligible under NCAA guidelines.
Dunbar said from his home that he plans to be in Blacksburg on June 27 for the start of summer school the next day. But he still doesn't know if he can play in the fall.
"I don't know what's happening," he said.
