WYTHE JURY CONVICTS WOMAN IN CROWBAR ATTACK

A Wythe County jury has convicted a woman of assault and battery for attacking her ex-husband's girlfriend with a crowbar, and set the maximum sentence.

Donna Crigger Heldreth Wilson will have to serve one year in jail and pay a $2,500 fine if Circuit Judge Willis Woods imposes the jury's sentence. The verdict followed a two-day trial this week.

Wilson is free on a $5,000 bond until sentencing.

Witnesses testified that Wilson hit Margaret Mullins of Atkins in the head with a crowbar last July. The injury required reconstructive surgery of Mullins' forehead.

The attack happened at a home shared by Wilson; her boyfriend; her former husband, Eddie Heldreth; and their three children.

Mullins testified that she and Heldreth had had a brief affair. She said she had gone to the home south of Rural Retreat to tell Wilson that she and Wilson's ex-husband were breaking up.
