GRABBING THE HORN WITH THE BULL

ROSS Perot, the bizarre billionaire who never lets logic get in the way of a cliche, is getting more air time than Barney the Dinosaur, and he makes about as much sense.

He reminds me of George Wallace 25 years ago, who used much the same technique. One of his real knee-slappers (he used it a thousand times) dealt with crime in Washington, D.C. He promised to stop crime in that city if he had to station a cop every 15 feet on every street. His followers roared their approval, without stopping to think that there simply weren't that many law-enforcement officers in the entire country.

Perot says if you have car trouble, get that crazy aunt out of the basement, put her under the hood and fix the problem. It's as simple as that. Grab the bull by the tail and face the situation. But he doesn't tell you which wires to pull or which buttons to push. Despite his "infommercials" and chalk talks, I've yet to see him put forward a single concrete solution that hasn't already been tried.

I'll agree with old Ross on one thing: He has the right theme song: "Crazy." JOHN W. SLAYTON ROANOKE
