Layne will be a member of Tech's 20-member 1993 freshman class. He was lightly recruited during the winter because he did not score 700 or better on the Scholastic Assessment Test until recently, his coach said. Once he qualified to play as a college freshman, recruiting interest increased. His coach, Tom Carlsen, said Layne would cancel scheduled visits to Maryland and East Carolina.
Layne's oral commitment is non-binding because it comes after the letter-of-intent signing period, which ended March 15.
Layne was among a strong crop of Orlando-area running backs, gaining more than 1,300 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns, Carlsen said. The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder has been timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
"He's a real smooth running back, a very elusive-type guy," Carlsen said.
