I just wanted to take this time to thank Bob Zeller for his candid and truthful commentary about The Winston. Usually, it is hard to find anybody really questioning the good old boy network of NASCAR officials. As soon as the race was over with, a buddy and I concluded that we had just witnessed the rebirth of roller derby. Bob, you must have read our minds.
It was fitting that this fiasco happened at Charlotte, N.C., home of the National Wrestling Association. I think The Winston should adopt the format of the Super Bowl, complete with a week off before the race and Michael Jackson singing between segments. Next year maybe they can get Ric Flair to serve as grand marshal.
Bob was exactly right when he talked about rules adjustments that favored (Dale) Earnhardt. This is nothing new to fans that were in Martinsville a month earlier. NASCAR is the only sport where rules are written in pencil and changed weekly.
Thanks again, Bob, for having the guts to criticize the sport you cover daily. Maybe you should have been at RFK Stadium covering the (Riddick Bowe-Jesse Ferguson) championship fight. That circus had about the same credibility. Oh yes, it was one hot night all right, but by the time it was through most of the heat was coming from beneath my collar.
