DALE EARNHARDT FAN SOUNDS OFF

In your May 24 paper, Bob Zeller's heading was "Late rulings cheapened The Winston." I disagree, as I'm sure a lot of fans do.

I'm very proud to admit that I'm a die-hard Earnhardt fan. And to me, along with a lot of other fans - and not just Earnhardt fans - The Winston was a very exciting race. It wasn't cheapened at all.

No rules were changed, except where Earnhardt jumped the restart on the last segment. And there is no rule about that because of the fact that no points were involved concerning the championship. Even the television announcer said that if it had been a regular race, Earnhardt would have had a stop-and-go penalty.

As good as Mark Martin, Earnhardt and Ernie Irvan were racing, I think all of the fans would have been disappointed if they hadn't allowed Earnhardt to line back up and restart the race just as they did. Martin and Irvan both still had their chance to win - they just couldn't outrun Earnhardt.
