MUSIC, BIBLE SCHOOLS CARRY AREA CHURCHES INTO SUMMER

Two major musical happenings top our calendar of church events this weekend:

The doors open at 6 tonight at BELVIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 3619 Onyx Drive, just off Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114), 2 1/2 miles east of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, for the interdenominational Gospel Singing and Praise Rally.

Christiansburg southern gospel duo Bob and Sandy Mullins will join other area gospel groups and soloists at their home church for this event.

Bob writes that an "exciting piano prelude" will begin at 6:30 as a treat for those who turn out early.

Among those also appearing will be Tolley Hurst.

The offering from this event will go toward the building and renovations fund at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville. For more information, call 639-6271 evenings.

Sunday night, The Tennessee Youth Chorale will be in Radford. The community youth choir will present a variety of classical and contemporary anthems and spirituals starting at 7:30 at the PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF RADFORD, 201 Fourth St.

They'll also do some Broadway show tunes and interpretive dance numbers.

Members of the troupe are staying with Radford Presbyterian church families.

The Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church Youth Handbell Choir of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., will accompany the chorale.

\ THE HEAVENLY VISIONS and THE STRINGS OF FAITH will be featured during gospel singing tonight at 7 at Hieland Hills Farm, on Virginia 8 south of Floyd. Call Sandra Ratliff, 763-3296, if you need to know more.

The NEW HOPE CHURCH OF GOD, Mudpike Road, Christiansburg, will sponsor gospel singing tonight at 7, featuring The Martin Family. Donations will benefit the church building fund. For more information, call 381-1137.

This spring marks 20 years of the YOUTH CLUB/LOGOS program at First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski. The program, which includes the Joyful Noise high school choir that tours each spring, was begun in 1972 during the Rev. Dr. Brett Fenwick's ministry at First Presbyterian. Over the years, about 350 young people have participated in this Christian education program.

In recognition, they've scheduled a reunion weekend June 12-13 for all members, former members and their guests.

It all starts June 12 with a reunion dinner at the Lions Club building in Dublin. Alma Bennett, a former church member who helped organize the local Logos program, will speak. Entertainment will include slides and pictures of the past two decades' activities.

Dale Milligan, founder of the international Logos program, will be the guest speaker during morning worship June 13 at 10:30 a.m. The Joyful Noise choir, under the direction of Brenda Burrus, will lead the service of music.

Lunch will follow for all members of the congregation and guests.

It's the annual Homecoming Sunday at SUNNYSIDE PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH at the corner of Lick Run and Mount Zion roads in Blacksburg. The Rev. T.H. Turpin of Radford will preach at 11 a.m., lunch will be at 12:45 p.m., and then The Young at Heart Quintet of Radford will sing at 2 p.m. Layne Board is the pastor.

\ SCHAEFFER MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH will celebrate its homecoming June 13 at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Ron Brown, pastor-elect of First Missionary Baptist Church, and the choir will lead the service.

\ ST. JUDE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH will hold its annual parish pot luck picnic Sunday at Bisset Park's Shelter No. 1 in Radford. Picknicking parishioners also should bring their own drinks. The church will supply cups, plates, utensils and napkins. There will be games for young and old, too.

Summertime means VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL at several area churches. St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road in Blacksburg, will offer a five-day program June 20-24, from 6 until 8 each evening.

Using the theme "Living in God's Creation," the program has classes for kids from preschool through grade 5 and for grownups. They'll serve a light supper at 6 each evening before classes start.

In the Radford area, the Presbyterian Church of Radford, Grace Episcopal Church, Christ Lutheran Church and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church are joining forces to sponsor Vacation Church School sessions that also employ the "Living in God's Creation" theme.

The class sessions will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Radford on the corner of Fourth and Randolph streets.

There are classes for preschool through junior high students and for adults. Registration runs through June 13. Call the Presbyterian Church of Radford at 639-2585 to sign up.

Vacation church school classes start June 27 at 5 p.m. and continue June 28 and 29, 6-8 p.m., and June 30, 6-8:30 p.m.

Later this summer in Blacksburg, Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and Northside Presbyterian Church will jointly sponsor a Vacation Bible School during August at Northside Presbyterian, 1017 Progress St.

Also using the "Living in God's Creation" theme, students will study the Bible and take part in art and musical activities, service projects, worship and recreation. Classes for youngsters aged 3 through sixth grade will run Aug. 16-20 from 9 to 11:45 a.m. each day.

Warm weather also means SUMMER SCHEDULES some area churches:

Grace Episcopal Church, 210 Fourth St., Radford, switches to its summer worship schedule Sunday with services at 8 and 10 a.m. through August.

The summer worship schedule starts Sunday, and runs through Aug. 29 at the Presbyterian Church of Radford on the corner of Fourth and Randolph streets. A church school gathering, with coffee or juice, fellowship, prayer and singing, gets under way at 9 a.m. each Sunday. Church school follows at 9:15 a.m. offering the "Journey to Jerusalem" class for all ages and Bible study for adults. The worship service is at 10 a.m.

The summer worship schedule at First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, begins Sunday, with worship at 10 a.m., except for June 13, when services will be at 10:30 a.m. Summer hours remain in effect through August 29.

Summer hours also start Sunday at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church on Church and Eakin streets. Morning worship will begin at 10, with fellowship and refreshments following the service. A nursery and extended session are available for youngsters up to age 5. Call 552-2504 for more information.

St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 7318 Peppers Ferry Road, Fairlawn, moves to its summer schedule Sunday with one Mass at 10 a.m. The church will continue to celebrate a Saturday Mass at 5:15 p.m.

Two morning worship services are on the summer schedule starting June 20 at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church, 107 W. Main St. There will be an 8:45 service in addition to the regular 10:55 service, with Sunday school in between at 9:45.

\ CHRISTIANSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 107 W. Main St., will recognize graduates Sunday at its 10:55 a.m. worship service. A coffee fellowship in the main hall precedes the service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday School classes are at 9:45 a.m.

The final communicants' class meets Sunday at 5 p.m. in Room 300.

\ SHAWSVILLE CONGREGATIONAL HOLINESS CHURCH, Alleghany Spring Road, has Sunday School at 10 a.m. and worship services at 11. The church also has Sunday and Wednesday evening services at 7. The pastor is the Rev. John Smith.

At GRACE ASSEMBLY, Christiansburg, the New Life Drama Company will present the gospel through drama Wednesday at 7 p.m. Their skits deal with the daily life of a Christian as well as major issues in today's society.

Missionary Charles Pettit and his family will be at RIVERVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH Sunday for the Sunday School and Evening Services. The church is on Big Stoney Creek Road (Virginia 635) between Pembroke and Pearisburg, about a third of a mile north of U.S. 460.

The Pettits will speak and show slides about their missionary work in St. Vincent.

Names in the news:

At the 1993 Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia commencement, Bishop \ MARTIN TOWNSEND was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity degree.

Folks in Blacksburg will remember that Townsend was rector of Christ Episcopal Church until last fall. Townsend recently was consecrated and installed as bishop of the Diocese of Easton, which encompasses Maryland's Eastern Shore.

\ THE REV. RICK ECKLUND of Floyd Parish United Methodist Charge will be ordained a deacon and probationary member of the Virginia Annual Conference June 21. Ecklund also will be reappointed to serve his fourth year as pastor of the charge, which includes Copper Hill, Havens Chapel, Huffville and Stonewall United Methodist churches.

Ecklund has been serving as a licensed local pastor of the United Methodist Church while he attends seminary at Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrisonburg, where he's pursuing his master of divinity degree.
