NEXT FACE OF AIDS: TEENS, ESPECIALLY GIRLS

The new face of AIDS is going to be a young face - and girls will be more at risk than boys - as the disease spreads among adolescents in the United States and worldwide, several experts warned Saturday.

"Adolescents are the leading edge of the next wave of this epidemic," said Dr. Karen Hein, director of the Montefiore Medical Center in New York, at a preview of data to be presented at this week's International Conference on AIDS.

In the United States, there are 3,058 AIDS cases among people ages 15 to 24. But that's up 77 percent from two years ago.

A top official of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said statistics from 22 states indicate teen-agers are being exposed at a rate much faster than previously believed, and girls are most frequently the victims. - Los Angeles Times
