DRIVER CHARGED IN DEATH OF 9-YEAR-OLD

The driver of a car that struck another car Thursday in Roanoke County, killing a 9-year-old boy, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Police said John Walton Stover, 20, was arrested on Friday night following the death of Dustin Washburn, a third-grader at Burlington Elementary School

Stover, who had a restricted driver's license because of a drunken-driving conviction, was driving a car which plowed into the back of a car driven by Robin Washburn, Dustin's mother.

The wreck, on Peters Creek Road, came after Stover drank beer at Valleypointe Corporate Center, even though he was under the legal drinking age of 21, police said.

The impact of the crash knocked the Washburn car into the air. It came down on its front bumper and landed in the median.
