One of the Cave Spring twins, Tiki, went out as a two-time state track champion. The other, Ronde, was denied a third championship by a hair in the 110-meter hurdles.
Tiki Barber added the boys' triple jump title to the long jump crown he won Friday.
Between them, the twins scored 28 points, giving Cave Spring fourth place behind repeat champion T.C. Williams, which had 60 points.
The Knights just missed getting one of the three team trophies. Lafayette was second with 32 points, ahead of third-place Menchville's 30 points.
Still, the Cave Spring's finish was the best for a Roanoke area Group AAA team since William Fleming, behind Robert Majors, tied for the 1983 crown.
Overall, it was not a great day for Roanoke Valley District athletes with the exception of Patrick Henry's Regina Johnson, who had a personal best in the shot put to finish second. Added on to Friday's third-place finish in the discus, she accounted for 14 points, second behind Tiki Barber for RVD athletes.
Arminta Crosby finished third in the girls' 100 for Patrick Henry, but she didn't place in the 200, giving the junior something to shoot for next year.
William Fleming's boys' runners - Clyde Lewis in the 400 and LeRoy Witt in the 200 - failed to place in their races.
Franklin County's Sandy Hudson, a sophomore, pulled a mild shocker by finishing sixth in the girls' 300 hurdles after barely making the finals on Friday.
Tiki Barber destroyed the field with his second jump in the flights, soaring to a personal best of 49 feet, 3 inches.
"I don't think anyone will beat that. Now I'm going for the record," he said before the finals.
Barber was right. No one, including himself, came within a foot of that jump. Barber, attempting to beat the record of 50-9, ran through his first attempt in the finals.
"That one I felt was going [right]. Then I went wrong, and had to pull up," he said.
His victory was a departure from last year when Barber scratched three times in the long jump trials and never made the finals. He also beat Sean Archer of Thomas Jefferson, who beat Barber in this event when they finished 1-2 as sophomores two years ago.
"I felt like I had it [the record] in me after the trials [flights], but I couldn't get it," said Barber.
"Last year it was the weather [that got me]," he added remembering a rainy Saturday. "I was psyched today when I got up and the sun came out. I had had a feeling it would be a miserable day again."
Ronde Barber was beaten by Potomac's Doug Haynesworth, whom he had beaten a week ago to take the Northwestern Region championship. It was a disappointing end to a great career in which Ronde had virtually matched his twin stride-for-stride on the athletic fields.
A false start made the runners start again, and Ronde Barber didn't get as good a start in the hurdles' event that he has owned for three years.
"The first gun was my best start. Like I said yesterday, I'm not running well and it carried over," said Ronde Barber. "I'm not making excuses. Doug beat me. I thought I could catch him at the end, and I couldn't. He was stronger than me, so I give him my respect.
"I had a great career and have nothing to hold my head down for. I still think I'm the best [hurdler], but that's for people to judge."
Johnson wound up a great career for Patrick Henry with personal bests in the discus and shot. Still, she was down, even with her second-place shot put finish behind Kellam's Tamika Powell, who had a 40-11 performance that was more than two feet better than Johnson's 38-8 1/2.
"When I got to that last throw, she was just too far ahead," Johnson said. "So I'm kind of bummed out. I think I'm capable of throwing 40 feet, but it's a lot of pressure."
PH coach Jeff Johnson put his weight performer's career in proper perspective.
"She's the kind of athlete you miss because she's always at practice and always working hard," he said. "Plus we'll miss the points."
Regina Johnson helped give PH 22 points, good enough to earn the Patriots a tie for sixth place behind state champion Phoebus, which had 52.
