TODD BODINE WINS GN RACE

Todd Bodine led all but four of the final 74 laps Saturday to win his first NASCAR Grand National race of the season, a 13.5-second victory over Chad Little in the GM Goodwrench 200.

Bodine briefly gave up the lead to Larry Pearson during a green-flag pit stop for fuel on lap 187, but Pearson's stop on lap 189 ruined his hopes when a wrench was left hanging on the car and he had to return to the pits.

Bodine reclaimed the lead on lap 191 and went on to the fifth GN victory of his career and his second at Dover Downs International Speedway. He claimed his first victory two years ago as leaders Ernie Irvan and Davey Allison had late problems. This time, he left no doubt about the $20,172 payday.

"It's not like Ernie blowing up and hitting the wall and Davey running out of gas. We just flat out beat 'em," he said.

Bodine's team didn't take a chance on repeating Allison's misfortune of 1991 and came in for a 4.5-second stop.

"We needed gas; it was that close to making it," Bodine said.

Following Bodine's Chevrolet and Little's Ford were Jeff Burton in a Ford and Dale Jarrett and Phil Parsons in Chevrolets. Pearson's Chevy wound up sixth.
