OBIT COPENHAVER, MARTHA SHANKLIN
COPENHAVER, Martha Shanklin, 83, of Marion, Va., died Saturday, June 5,
1993, in Smyth County Community Hospital. Mrs. Copenhaver was born to the late
James R. and Mary Cooper Shanklin. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in
Decatur, Ga. She taught school in Smyth County for many years, teaching in
Sugar Grove, Chilhowie, Rich Valley and Marion High Schools. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was
District Representative, past officer, past chairman of the Literature
Committee and past Program Chairman for the United Methodist Women. Mrs.
Copenhaver gave her personal services and monetary support in multiple
organizations, such as the Book Club, Music Club, Mary Circle, and Emory &
Henry College Board of Visitors. She is survived by her devoted husband of 57
years, Francis J. Copenhaver of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha
and Dr. Raymond H. Kirby of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lucile and Edward F.
Stinson of Roanoke, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, F. Joseph Jr. and Karen
Copenhaver of Marion; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be held Monday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist
Church with the Rev. J.N. Howard officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose
Lawn Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the
service. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at
Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is in charge of
arrangements.
