The Winston-Salem, N.C., driver ran around, yelling at racing officials, yelling at anybody who would listen to his complaint.
In Victory Lane stood 62-year-old Paul Radford. He had no complaints. The Ferrum driver took the lead for good on the 66th lap, passing Rumley on the inside coming out of turn 4.
The race went to the wire, with Rumley touching Radford's bumper several times in the last three laps. Rumley was upset because he said Billy Martin, who was a couple of laps behind at that point, got in his way as he tried to pass Radford.
"He didn't use his brains," Rumley said of Martin. "It didn't cost me the race, but it cost me a chance at it."
Said Martin, "I was on the inside, where I was supposed to be. He [Rumley] had 99 laps to pass Radford."
Rumley led the first 22 laps. Radford then led 22 of the next 23. Rumley reclaimed the lead on the 46th lap, holding the top spot until Radford took the lead for good on lap 66.
"Somebody came up to me before the race and asked me if I thought I was going to win tonight," Radford said. "I said yes. I had a funny feeling about tonight."
Radford, the division's points leader at the track, said he benefited from the yellow flags that dominated the end of the race. Laps 70 through 89 were run under caution, mainly because of various minor wrecks.
Jeff Agnew finished third, and Kelly Denton was fourth.
In other New River Valley races:
Kenny Montgomery widened his points edge in the Limited Sportsman division, leading the entire way in winning the 35-lap race. Charlie Miles of Christiansburg finished second, Rock Harris of Yadkinville, N.C., was third, and Kevin Sweeney of Christiansburg took fourth place.
Eddie Rankin took the lead on the 11th lap and won the 25-lap Modified Mini race. Christiansburg's Charlie Smith finished second.
Tony Howell led all the way in winning the 25-lap Mini Stock race. Kevin Light was second.
Grump Wills led all the way en route to an easy victory in the 25-lap Pure Stock race. Wills took a three-second lead on the first lap and increased the lead from there, winning by seven seconds over Christiansburg's Tommie Allie.
