COMMUNITY COLLEGES CAN GIVE A JUMP START

I WAS pleased to read the May 18 letter on choosing a college by Roger Wilson in the Roanoke Times & World-News ("Community college may be best choice"). Years ago, after finishing high school near the top of my class, I started college away from home at a large "name" school. My parents spent a lot of money that first year. I did not do very well.

Fortunately, that summer I discovered a local community college. I enjoyed the small classes and personal attention from the faculty. I lived at home. I was able to earn enough in the summer to pay my college expenses. My grades jumped. Eventually, I transferred to a four-year university and graduated with ease.

A community college certainly is a relatively inexpensive way to obtain the first two years of college. Based on my experience, it can also be an excellent start to a four-year college education. WILLIAM T. STACK Executive Vice President Richardson-Johnston-Wynn, Inc. ROANOKE
