Long ago nicknamed "Maddog," Matlock agreed to a day in the doghouse if the children read enough books in the Accelerated Reader program to accumulate 3,000 points.
Well, the pupils accumulated almost twice that much by reading 4,838 books between January and May.
The seventh grade scored the highest point count for a class with 1,910.
The second grade read the most books - 815.
And fifth-grader Hannah Montgomery accumulated the most individual points with 179.
Following a morning all-school assembly, Matlock was taken to his doghouse in front of the school, chained to a tree, given a bowl and fire hydrant and treated to a real dog's day.
One class was responsible for walking him, one fed him doggie snacks in his, another class tried to teach the old dog new tricks, and still another fed him lunch.
The Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading-management program. Pupils may choose from 150 books classified as "Basic," "Classics" and "Bridge to Adult Reading."
After reading a book at his or her own pace, a pupil logs on the computer and takes a test for comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Test scores and point awards are computed for the teacher's evaluation, and the student then selects another book to read.
