WASHINGTON - American consumers increased their borrowing for the ninth consecutive month in April, bringing their total debt to an all-time high, the government said Monday.

Consumer installment credit outstanding rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.6 percent to $754 billion, the Federal Reserve said.

However, economists say consumers could turn cautious again without continued improvement in the job market.

The biggest gain came in revolving credit, which includes credit cards. It rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 7.5 percent, following an identical increase in March.- Associated Press Virginia Blues add workers
