BEWARE OF `EXPERTS' WHO WANT TO CUT TREES

Given the widespread damage to trees and shrubs from Friday's storm, don't be surprised if people start showing up at your door offering their services to remove or repair damaged or fallen trees and brush. However, some of these "experts" may just be taking advantage of your misfortune to part you and your money.

Don't be a victim, warns Agricultural Extension Agent Joe Hunnings of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service. Hunnings offers several ways to make sure you are hiring a professional arborist. The person you hire should:

Have a telephone listing. Although anyone can be listed in the Yellow Pages, a listing at least shows some degree of permanence.

Be part of an established business and working for the company, not moonlighting.

Be able to show proof of insurance for property damage, personal liability and workers compensation.

Be able to provide references from other individuals or companies. If possible, check with previous clients.

Ideally, be a member of a professional association or have professional certification.

Hunnings said never let yourself be rushed into an inadvisable choice by bargain prices, and never pay in advance.
