AREA TEACHER JOINING VSU HALL OF FAME

John Thomas "Tom" Payne, a distinguished coach and teacher at high schools in Salem and Roanoke, has been selected to the Virginia State University sports hall of fame.

Payne was a three-time All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association choice in football, basketball and baseball from 1925-29 and later played semi-professional baseball for a number of teams, including the Norfolk and Western All Stars in Roanoke.

Payne's basketball teams at George Washington Carver High in Salem won Western District and Tri-State championships, and he later taught in Roanoke at Harrison Elementary School and Booker T. Washington Junior High.

Payne, 87, lives in Salem. He retired from Roanoke City Schools in 1971 after 39 years in the school system.
