ANGER OVER VIETNAM LINGERS ON AND ON

FROM THE Vietnam Wall in Washington, we were treated on Memorial Day to the spectacle of a smattering of patriots booing and taunting their commander in chief.

In 1964, our government was vigorously pushing the famous "domino theory." Remember? Some of us didn't buy it.

I've noticed a certain residual anger seething in many Vietnam veterans, and I understand it. Our men and women returned to a country to be convinced that 10 years of war had amounted to a calamitous exercise in futility, waste and bad judgment.

Does anyone here feel in any way threatened by North Vietnam? If there is a threat, it may not be military but rather commercial. North Vietnam's economic progress, as it fashions (without our help) a thriving free-market economy, is said to be a kind of junior-grade South Korea, no less. BOB SHIELDS ROANOKE
