TWO PLAYERS ON COURSE IN JUNIOR GOLF

Two Roanoke golfers were in contention Wednesday after the first round of the Greater Greensboro Junior in Browns Summit, N.C.

In the girls' division, Lee Shirley carded a 39-40-79 on the par-72 Bryan Park & Golf Club Champions Course. She was tied for sixth place, five strokes behind first-round leader Wendi Patterson of Atlanta.

In the boys' 15-18 division, Ryan Ketron completed his first round in 43-37-80. That left him 11 strokes behind first-place Michael Henderson of Raleigh, N.C.

In other golf:

At Pinehurst, N.C., Danville's Jimmy Flippen, the 1992 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year, shot a 3-under-par 68 to earn qualifying medalist honors in the North & South Amateur.

Flippen, 20, a member of the University of Virginia golf team, shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day 139. He finished the front nine at 2-under 33 and the back nine with a 1-under 35. He had 10 birdies during his two rounds.

The qualifying score to make the cut for the 60 low players was 151. The qualifiers join four exempt players for match play today. Third-round and quarterfinal-round matches will be played Friday. The semifinal round is Saturday, and the 36-hole final will be played Sunday.

BASEBALL L-Sox return to battered home

The Lynchburg Red Sox will return Friday to their home field, City Stadium, which sustained damage estimated at more than $10,000 during severe thunderstorms June 4.

The Red Sox begin a six-game home stand with a weekend series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Repair work is going on at City Stadium, but the field will be in playing shape barring inclement weather, Red Sox officials said Wednesday.
