MAN CHARGED AFTER MOONSHINE RAID

State and county law officers raided a Henry County house Tuesday night and seized 45 gallons of moonshine - including 40 gallons stowed in an old Cadillac sitting in a field.

Ernest Roy Joyce, 63, of Henry County, was arrested and charged with three counts of selling untaxed whiskey. Those charges are misdemeanors. Joyce was also charged with a felony count of possessing a firearm while selling illegal whiskey.

Wallace Vann of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board said an undercover agent made three alcohol buys at the house over about four weeks. He bought at least a case - 6 gallons - each time, Vann said.

Vann said the 45 gallons seized on Tuesday was "a respectable amount of moonshine to be in a location other than a still site."

Joyce, who is the operator of Joyce's Oil Co. in the Spencer section of the county, was released on his own recognizance. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
