HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SOME CIVIC-MINDED SENIORS

Seniors who will graduate tonight from Pulaski County High School worked on a number of civic projects in addition to classes and homework assignments during their final high-school year.

The members of the Class of 1993 undertook specific projects under the leadership of a 22-member senior Steering Committee led by Tracy McCoy, the president of the class.

One of the projects was to raise money for a one-time scholarship in memory of Richard Ken Alley Jr., a member of the class who was killed in an accident July 26, 1990, on Claytor Lake when the jet ski he was riding collided with a boat.

In her president's farewell, McCoy added a "P.S." to her note to the class on the last four years and how it seemed only yesterday that they were all arriving for their first high school year and attending orientation.

It read:

"Ken - Even though you're not here to walk across the stage with us, you're in our thoughts. We love and miss you dearly."

Class members managed to raise $900 for the Richard Ken Alley Jr. Memorial Scholarship.

They chose to give award to Derek Dwayne Kemp.

The steering committee also paved the way for the class to take part in Virginia's Adopt-a-Highway program.

Students have been cleaning debris from two miles of roadway along Ken Alexander Road and by the McDonald's restaurant during the year.

The committee handled the more traditional social agenda for the class, including the senior picnic held this year at Appalachian Power Co.'s picnic grounds instead of at the school as traditionally done.

In conjunction with the Student Council, the seniors sponsored one of the school's most successful Red Cross Bloodmobile visits.

The Steering Committee furnished volunteers for the daylong visit, drawing accolades from Red Cross personnel out of Roanoke.
