CANCER-CENTER PLAN ENDORSED

The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors has belatedly endorsed a proposed cancer treatment center at Pulaski Community Hospital, but just barely.

The supervisors voted 3-2 for the endorsement, with Mason Vaughan breaking earlier tie votes. Vaughan had not been at the May 24 meeting when the board could not decide whether to support locating the center at Pulaski Community or just generally anywhere in the New River Valley. All those had votes ended in a 2-2 tie.

Radford Community Hospital also is seeking the state approval for the $2.79-million radiology oncology treatment center.

Dr. Bruce Fariss, whose medical office is in Radford, and Joseph Sheffey, who is on the Radford hospital's foundation board, had voted earlier to endorse placing the center at any hospital in the valley. Ira "Pete" Crawford, whose wife works at Pulaski Community, had joined board Chairman Jerry White in voting to endorse the Pulaski hospital's application. Fariss, Sheffey and Crawford all disclosed their attachments to the various hospitals but all said they could evaluate the matter objectively. It was Sheffey who brought the matter before the board again Monday night when all five members were present.
