OBIT WEIKEL, THOMAS L.
WEIKEL, Thomas L., 59, of 3005 Hornbeam Court, Virginia Beach, died
Tuesday, June 8, 1993, at his home in Virginia Beach. He was born in
Covington, was an employee of Federal Civil Service, and was a retired Navy
Chief Petty Officer. He retired from the U.S. Navy in July 1971. He was a
member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, and active in the Virginia Beach Amateur
Radio Club. He began his military career during the Korean War in 1950, and
retired in 1971, after serving on numerous ships and aircraft squadrons, for
over twenty years. He was a prisoner of Fidel Castro for a short period in
1958, and served in Vietnam. After his military career, he graduated from Old
Dominion University with a bachelor's degree in Special Education. He served a
local Southern Baptist church as minister of Religious Education for two and
one half years. He was an ordained deacon, licensed minister, and choir member
in his local church. He taught adults in Sunday school for over 30 years. His
life revolved around his church and family. In civil service, he served on the
staff of Commander Naval Air Force Atlantic, Aircraft Facilities Branch, as an
Electronics Equipment Specialist. Survivors include his wife, Dawn Weikel; a
daughter, Faith A. Williams of Virginia Beach; two sons, Thomas L. Weikel, Jr
of Virginia Beach, and Kenneth F. Weikel of Waldorf, Md.; three brothers,
James D. Weikel of Radford, Ira L. Weikel of St. Louis, Mo., and John E.
Weikel of Dublin; and a sister, Mary Lou Martin of Pittsburg, Pa.; three
grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, June 11,
1993, in Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, Va. Beach by Dr. Larry Harper, pastor.
Burial will be in Colonial Grove, with full military honors. Kellum Funeral
Home, Bonney Road Chapel,is handling arrangements. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The family asks that
flowers be omitted and donations be made to the Thalia Lynn Baptist Church
Building Fund in his memory.
