KENT DAVIS JR. of Roanoke received a fellow of photography degree at the Virginia Professional Photographers Association convention. The degree is awarded for service to photography and photographic excellence.

\ THE CERTIFIED INSURANCE COUNSELOR designation has been awarded to Philip J. Altizer Sr., Allstate Insurance Co.; Susan S. McLain, McDonough Caperton Insurance Group; Joseph S. Novak, Suter Associates; Judy D. Pruett, Charles Lunsford/Rollins Hudig Hall; and David A. Snebold, The Travelers.

Candidates are awarded the designation after passing examinations in agency management, commercial casualty, commercial property, life and health, and personal lines.

\ MICHAEL R. SMITH, a partner with Barham, Stilwell & Smith, a business- and estate-planning company, has been awarded a certificate in life insurance planning by The American College, Bryn Mawr, Pa. He recently completed five examinations in the chartered life underwriter programs.

\ DONALD BAKER of Roanoke has received the 1992 regional sales award from Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corp. of East Hanover, N.J.

\ PITNEY BOWES in Roanoke has four salesmen who qualified for the company's Sales Leadership Conference by achieving high levels of sales excellence and customer service and being in the top 10 percent of the company's nationwide sales force.

Attending this year's conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., were: Charles Eggleston, 26-year employee; Michael Neighbors, a four-year employee; H. Landon Carder, a two-year employee; and Lawrence M. Compter, an 11-year company employee.

\ JOHN LAMBERT ASSOCIATES, a Roanoke marketing communications firm, has won a statewide award from the 1992 Virginia Public Relations Conference.

The Medallion award was given for work performed for the 1992 Renew Roanoke campaign, and was chosen from among 50 submitted in the statewide contest. It is the agency's 14th award in as many years.

\ ROBIN SAUL, formerly of Roanoke, has been named vice president/publisher of the Carroll County Times, Westminster, Md. She has served as vice president/production of the Virginian-Pilot/Ledger-Star in Norfolk since 1991.

In addition to publishing the newspaper, Saul will be responsible for a large commercial web offset printing operation and numerous rack-distributed real-estate books.

\ LIN CHAFF PUBLIC RELATIONS & ADVERTISING of Roanoke was one of 13 Medallion Award winners recognized statewide for superior performance in public relations during 1992.

Chaff's award, in the special projects, business/industry or government entity, low budget category, was for the launch of First Team Auto Mall's "No-Hassle Buying" campaign.

\ LINDA H. MARKHAM, western regional manager and vice president of Virginia First Savings Bank, has been elected president of the Valley Network, Business and Professional Women for 1993-94.

Markham, who was selected the group's outstanding member for 1992-93, also serves on the board of directors for the Salem/Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce.

\ MARY N. VINSON, formerly of Roanoke, has been promoted to director-regulatory of C&P Telephone.

Vinson began her career with C&P as a supervisor in the company's Richmond office. She then transferred to Norfolk and held various positions in community relations and engineering. Most recently, she was manager for the company's business service centers in southern Virginia.

Vinson is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

\ MARK S. MILLER of Roanoke has been recognized as one of the top distributors in the mid-Atlantic region by Mac Tools Inc., a developer, manufacturer and international distributor of tools and equipment for technicians.

\ WAYNE TALIAFERRO, branch manager of the Associates Financial Services office in Roanoke, has been awarded the company's President's Association Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement, with particular emphasis on growth and profit performance.
