Scott Paper Co. and McDonald's restaurants are raising money for the Ronald McDonald House of Southwest Virginia.
The Ronald McDonald House will receive 10 cents for every Scott product UPC label dropped into designated containers at Roanoke-area McDonald's restaurants through June 30.
Labels may be taken from any Scott product: paper towels, bathroom tissue, facial tissue, napkins and baby wipes.
Roanoke physician named Laughlin Fellow
Dr. John R. Hubbard, an advanced resident in the University of Virginia's Roanoke-Salem psychiatric medicine residency program, has been selected as one of 15 Laughlin Fellows by the American College of Psychiatrists.
Laughlin Fellows are selected from thousands of residents each year on the basis of their potential for substantial contributions to psychiatry and in recognition of outstanding leadership and achievements.
Hubbard has done extensive research in biochemical aspects of hormones, stress, cancer, arthritis, and drugs of abuse. He has co-authored more than 30 published scientific articles, seven book chapters and two books.
He is a physician at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Roanoke Memorial Hospitals and Roanoke Mental Health Services as a part of his specialty training in psychiatric medicine.
Rotary Club member wins service award
Reid Jones Jr. has received the Service Above Self Award, the highest honor provided to a Rotarian by Rotary International.
A past president of the Rotary Club of Roanoke and a Rotarian since 1951, Jones is one of 91 Rotarians worldwide to win the award, which recognizes volunteers who embody the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."
Roanoke Optimist Club honors DARE officers
The Optimist Club of Roanoke recognized four Drug Abuse Resistance Education officers at its recent "Respect for Law" dinner.
The officers were: Ronald Thompson, town of Vinton; Rosemary McElvein, city of Salem; James Stanley, Roanoke County; and Michael Rayl, city of Roanoke.
