MAN FOUND DEAD AFTER SMALL FIRE

A 67-year-old man was found dead Wednesday after a small fire destroyed a couch in his Southwest Roanoke apartment, authorities said.

Lewis A. Green, of 2329 Winthrop Ave., was found lying on the couch with extensive burns on his body, Roanoke police said. A preliminary investigation suggested that the fire was accidental.

Capt. Tom Hogan, of the Crystal Spring Fire Department, said the cause of the fire appeared to be a lit cigarette in the couch, but an investigation was under way to determine the cause definitively.

An autopsy was to be performed to establish if Green's death was attributable to the fire.

Hogan said the fire was very small, burning only the couch and a small part of the wall. It took firefighters about five minutes to extinguish, he said.

The apartment's television set was on when firefighters arrived, Hogan said.
