In Pinehurst, N.C., qualifying medalist Jimmy Flippen of Danville led the way Thursday into the third round of match play at the 93rd annual men's North & South Amateur golf tournament.

Flippen, 20, the 1992 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year at the University of Virginia, defeated Cole Whitt of Henderson, N.C., 5 and 4. He had to go an extra hole in his second-round match to defeat Richard Southwick of Shelter Island, N.Y.

The third and quarterfinal rounds will be played today.

In Lynchburg, five area players were ousted Thursday at the 33rd annual Central Virginia Invitational Tennis Tournament.

In the men's open division of the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section event, Nick Molloy of Roanoke won by default before dropping a second-round match to David Gibbs of Richmond 6-1, 6-1.

Tommy McDonald of Salem had a bye through the first round, then dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Bryan Jones of Kings Mountain, N.C. Three former Radford University baseball players have signed free-agent contracts with teams in the fledgling Frontier League.

Highlanders shortstop Tom Curran and second baseman Rob Amos signed with the Zanesville (Ohio) Greys, and outfielder Donnie Just signed with the Tri-State Tomahawks of Ashland, Ky.

The Frontier League is an independent minor league with teams in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio.

The Late Model Stock battle between the Fords and the Chevrolets will continue Saturday night in the 100-lap feature of the Jesse Jones 200 at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Christiansburg's Ronnie Thomas has four victories in his Ford, and Johnny Rumley and Ferrum's Paul Radford each have two victories in Chevys on the NASCAR-sanctioned .416-mile paved oval.

In addition to the Late Model Stock battle, which last week attracted 26 drivers, there will be a 35-lap race for Limited Sportsmen and 25-lap events for Modified Mini Stock, Mini Stock and Pure Stock drivers.

Gates open at 2 p.m., with practice starting at 4 p.m. Time trials start at 6:15, and the first race is at 8 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $1 for children 10 and younger.
