SALES FLAT IN APRIL

Taxable retail sales for April were flat in Western Virginia, according to figures received Thursday from the state Department of Taxation.

Statewide, taxable sales were up 5 percent or $2 billion, to $39.6 billion from $37.6 billion in the 1992 period.

Roanoke's taxable sales, however, dropped $7 million from a year ago, to $1.009 billion from $1.016 billion. The city's taxable sales in March rose nearly $8 million, or 9 percent.

May's taxable sales figures will be released in early July.

Sales in Lynchburg were up nearly $5 million, or 8 percent, from $58.8 million a year ago to $63.7 million. In Richmond, sales increased $6.5 million, or 4 percent, from $161.8 million to $168.3 million. - Staff report
