WINNERS NAMED IN WRITING CONTEST

Twenty-five Wytheville Chautauqua Festival Creative Writing Contest winners will be honored June 25 at an awards ceremony during the festival.

Poet and children's book author Jeff Daniel Marion of New Market, Tenn., will give a talk about the process of doing books for young readers.

Marion, poet-in-residence and director of the Appalachian Center at Carson-Newman College, has published three poetry collections, three poetry chapbooks, poems and stories in more than 50 literary journals and 10 anthologies, and the children's book, "Hello, Crow."

The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Hatcher Hall at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.

Judges for this year's writing contest were Parks Lanier and Warren Self from Radford University; Larry Richmond and Kate Foreman, Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon; Bonnie Wynn, New River Community College, Dublin; and Martha Vaught, Wythe County schools.

Kelly Ann Creger of Wytheville took first place in two-grade six to nine categories, and Wendy White of Floyd won two second places in adult competition. The winners were:

Adult essay: Wilma J. Snyder, Wytheville, first place; Wendy White, second.

Adult poetry: Dahna Lineberry, Hillsville, first; Wendy White, second; Roger Walke, Blacksburg, third.

Adult short story: Linda M. Spiker, Wytheville, first; Patricia M. Armstrong, Blacksburg, second; Anitta J. Roberts, Independence, third.

High school essay: April Asbury, Pulaski, first; Lorna Simmerman, Wytheville, second.

High school poetry: Tracey Jones, Wytheville, first; John Gregory, Rural Retreat, second; Amy M. Wright, Wytheville, third.

High school short story: Chelyen Davis, Bluefield, first; Emily Brouwer, Radford, second; Michelle Buenafe, Bluefield, third; Tara Prater, Oakwood, honorable mention.

Grade six-nine essay: Kelly Ann Creger, first; Jason Porter, Max Meadows, second; Tommy Manuel, Max Meadows, third.

Grade six-nine poetry: Jessica Funk, Ivanhoe, first; Julia Mosolgo, Cedar Bluff, second; Edward Hoffman, Wytheville, third.
