MAN DEAD FROM SMOKE INHALATION

A man killed in an apartment fire Wednesday afternoon died from smoke inhalation, a medical examiner said.

Lewis A. Green, 67, of 2329 Winthrop Ave., was found sitting in the corner of a couch which was destroyed by the blaze.

Green's death was the first fire-related fatality in the city this year.

The apartment's television was on when firefighters arrived.

The arm of the cloth sofa had burned. A cushion had its corner nibbled away by flames.

Neighbors said Green had moved into the apartment a little over a week ago.

The cause of death was determined Thursday morning by Dr. William Massello, the medical examiner.

Assistant Fire Marshal David Deck said the blaze was fueled by a cigarette which had burned its way into the foam rubber interior of the couch.

Cigarette butts and spent matches were found throughout the efficiency apartment, Deck said.

Firefighters were called to the apartment after residents smelled smoke and alerted the apartment complex's management.

It took firefighters about five minutes to extinguish the blaze.
