As it has done for teachers this year, the School Board gave Wilson a 3 percent raise for his next and final year before retirement, bringing his annual salary to $102,784. It also approved a 3 percent raise for Assistant Superintendent Deanna Gordon, bringing her annual pay to $69,958.
The raises appear larger than they are, however, said Chairman Frank Thomas, because the board rolled cash benefits - which have been paid separately in the past - into their base pay.
That is, Wilson's salary appears to have jumped about $12,000 because the board included his $6,000 annual car allowance and $3,424 in health insurance benefits in his base pay.
It had to do so, he said, because of changes in the laws governing the Virginia Retirement System, which would not honor those benefits when calculating Wilson's retirement pay. Wilson has said he will retire in July 1994.
The board always intended those benefits to count toward retirement pay, Thomas said.
Likewise, the board rolled Gordon's annual $1,000 annuity into her base pay, raising it an additional $1,000. The changes did not change the total amount of money paid to either Gordon or Wilson, Thomas said.
In other School Board news, the county's School Board Selection Committee reappointed board member Maurice Mitchell to his post Thursday afternoon.
