Blythe was responsible for negotiating the agreement between Bell Atlantic, C&P, Virginia Tech and the town of Blacksburg to develop the Blacksburg Electronic Village. The venture uses Tech's computer information systems and telephone technology to create an information network linking homes, businesses, libraries and the university.
Blythe has worked with the university's information systems since 1977 and served as director of communications resources for a year before moving to the vice president's office in 1991.
"We are very pleased that Erv will now assume this position permanently," said Fred Carlisle, provost and senior vice president at Tech. "He has served the university well over the past 15 years."
He has managed upgrading of the university's phone system, the installation of fiber optic cable and increasing computer access on campus.
Before coming to Tech, Blythe was director of the computer systems center for the U.S. Department of Defense.
He has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's of urban studies from Tech. He is pursuing a doctorate in environmental design and planning.
He lives in Fincastle with his wife, Betsy and two children.
