OBIT-SLAYTON, COOPER P.
SLAYTON, Cooper P., 78, of Rt. 3, Rocky Mount, died Thursday, June 10,
1993, in the local hospital. He was born Feb. 11, 1915, a son of the late
Grover Cleveland and Nannie Cooper Slayton. Mr. Slayton was an active member
of Beulah Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus, a member of the
adult choir, and various committees through the years. He was also active in
the life of his community as a member of the former Sontag Ruritan Club and
the Sontag Community Club. Mr. Slayton was one who loved his fellow man and
was always ready to extend a helping hand. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Alice Hutchinson Woody Slayton. Surviving are one stepson and wife, Joe
Willis III and Peggy Y. Woody, Rocky Mount; two stepdaughters and husbands,
Ruth W. and Hugh C. Frith, Rocky Mount, Nadine W. and William Perdue,
Martinsville; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother and
sister-in-law, Wilson and Mary Slaten, Rocky Mount; four sisters and two
brothers-in-law, Helen S. Hunt, Lynchburg, Garnett and Aaron McCrickard,
Raleigh, N.C., Evelyn and Robert Hensley, Pensacola, Fla., Dorothy S.
Anderson, Roanoke; seven nieces and nephews; a special friend, Virginia
Hodges. Funeral services will be conducted at Beulah Baptist Church, 11 a.m.,
Saturday with Rev. T. Ivey Adams Jr. and Dr. Joe R. Bryant officiating.
Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Because of his love and
devotion to the choir, the family suggests memorials be made to the Organ Fund
of the church, Rt. 2 Box 134, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. The family will receive
friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St.,
Rocky Mount, and other times at Mr. Slayton's residence.
