GILES' CLASS LEADER TAKES BROTHER'S PATH

The footsteps Katherine Coffey is following have formed a well-trod path. The Giles High School senior was named this year's valedictorian, the same honor her older brother, Joe, earned two years ago.

The diffident brother's response? "I really didn't pave the way. I was following a set myself."

That's true.

Two weeks after tonight, Katherine Coffey will enroll in Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, this time following not only Joe, but also Ed, her older brother who graduated from Virginia Tech in mechanical engineering in May 1992. The brothers followed their father, Bob, a 1973 Tech engineering graduate.

The work load for such a curriculum is intense, but this senior is ready for it. This year she has carried seven classes, four of which are college classes offered by New River Community College.

In addition, she was district champion in girl's tennis, captain of the cheering squad and president of the student body. She is on the administrative board of her church, Greenville United Methodist, and is the student representative on the Hoechst Celanese Community Advisory Committee. For all of this academic and athletic effort, she was given the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

The key to this juggling act has been her time management skills.

Yes, you're never too young to learn time management these days.

"That's been one of the most important things I've learned, how to manage my time," Coffey said.

She has no illusions about next year: "I expect the work load will be much heavier."

Enrolling in summer school, where she will take calculus and linear algebra, is her way to get a head start on college as well as get acclimated to the school.

Still, she is counting on her ace in the hole, Joe, for the inside scoop on school life. "Plus, he has the car," she noted. "Though he doesn't say much about having a little sister on campus with him."

Joe is courtly about the idea. "Actually, it should be pretty neat watching out for her, helping her to keep straight," he said. "Besides, she'll do well on her own. She has always worked hard."
