VALEDICTORIAN AT NARROWS PILES UP THE GRANTS

So what is discrete math, anyway?

"My teacher said to say it's math you do with your clothes on," offered Brian Weaver. The valedictorian of Narrows High School is enrolled in the class at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Dublin and by now he is used to all the bad jokes and suffers them with a good humor.

Weaver is facing college with enough scholarships to ease the money worries, if not the scholastic concerns. He was awarded a National Science Scholar scholarship, a Byrd Scholar scholarship and a three-year Air Force ROTC scholarship that starts his sophomore year.

Weaver is one of 870 people nationally who received a letter from President Bill Clinton announcing the National Science Scholar Scholarship award. The U.S. Department of Education program gives two $1,700 scholarships per congressional district. The student is judged on academic record, extracurricular activities and a written essay.

Weaver also captured the Byrd Scholarship on the basis of his academic and extracurricular record. The state Department of Education gives $1,500 to each of the 147 graduating seniors chosen from a pool of 312 applicants.

The U.S. Air Force, in return for his military service and studying electrical engineering, will underwrite nearly all of Weaver's expenses. This fits his plan to study engineering at the University of Virginia. "I've always been interested in the way things work, and engineering is a career that lets me do that."

The college experience will not be a new one for Weaver. He has 12 hours of biology from two summers of class work at Mountain Lake's UVa. biological station. "That's prepared me somewhat for the work load, although it won't be the same, since there were fewer distractions there than what I'll probably find in Charlottesville," he said.

He was captain of the Mountain Academic Competition Conference team and he led the Narrows High School "High Q" team that appeared on the television quiz show. He is a member of DeMolay, a Masonic youth organization, and the Narrows Youth Leadership Academy.
