STORM FLATTENS TREES SAVED AT SCHOOL SITE

Some trees on the new Blacksburg Elementary School site that had been saved from the contractor's bulldozer fell instead to the violent June 4 thunderstorm that swept the area.

About eight trees on the site were knocked down by the storm, said Larry Schoff, director of facilities maintenance for Montgomery County Schools. They were cut up and hauled away.

Neighbors fought successfully to save many of the trees after it was learned they would be cut to make way for the school. Plans are to use the wooded area as an outdoor laboratory for students.

None of the trees fell toward the school site, Schoff said.
