Council will consider the recommendation from W.E. Willis, city electric utility director, at its meeting Monday that would increase the average residential power bill 6.7 percent, or almost $4 a month. The city last increased power rates in 1987.
Willis recommends the city adopt the new Apco rate schedule, which took effect last month, pending State Corporation Commission approval.
Council also will hear a request from the Regional Jail Study Committee for more money for a required planning study. Committee Chairman Bob Lloyd said the estimated $75,000 cost will be prorated among the five jurisdictions on the panel.
Council also will study a plan to keep outside water and other substances from contaminating the city water system. In January, the Virginia Department of Health cited Radford for not having the required "cross-connection control and backflow prevention program" in place.
The cost of the program has been estimated at $41,000 for the first year.
